4 out of 5 stars New Decade, New Approach for Grace and The Boys   August 21, 2010

The sound on Grace & The Nocturnals' new self-titled release is clearly more tricked out and energy-driven than on prior releases. Additionally, there's a departure here from Grace's blue-eyed soul vocal style in favor of a more feisty, stripped-down, rock & roll effrontery, with no shortage of sassy-sounding screams. On first listen, her singing seems a bit unnatural and even forced, but on subsequent listens this begins to make more sense for her, and it becomes clear that the whole band is evolving. The lyrics have grown more provocative, the guitar work more complex, and the tracks generally upbeat and approachable. While not a complete reinvention for the group, this is a welcomed repositioning that will rapidly grow on the listener.

5 out of 5 stars By The Grace Of God ...   August 7, 2010

She just keeps getting better and better. This is a girl, an artist, who has that special touch. That magic touch (if you will) to be highly successful in the music business. Some are born with this. Some are not. Grace obviously was. There are however, a few GPN 'purists' who say that Grace's sound/look/style/music has changed, in particular with this latest release. That may or may not be. But I guess what concerns me the most is how I feel about this new album. And how Grace (and Cat, Matt, Scott & Benny) feel about it. Myself, I'm pretty happy with it. In fact, I love it. Actually. And as far as I know, Grace herself (and the Nocturnals) are pretty damn happy with it as well. And they have every right to be. As far as I'm concerned, Grace is "rocking this planet" right now. She is one dynamic singer. And of course, it goes without saying that we LOVE Grace on that Hammond B3 organ!! And Matt, I like his style on drums (and I play a little myself so I know where he's coming from). Scott and Benny are incredible on guitar. AND, I think Cat (on bass) is an excellent addition to GPN. What's not to like? Furthermore, sometimes Grace and her sound, her style, brings me back to the music and the sound, of the late '60's and early '70's. And I have to admit, I have no problem with that at all. Keep it rockin' Grace!!

Grace has a fantastic voice. This is a good CD, the songs are great. I'm big fan of Grace's work! But there something missing in this release it does not have the same Raw Emotion feeling that Grace's other recordings have and what attracted me to there music it has more of Corporate produced feeling to it. I like the design of CD to look and feel like a Vinyl record.
I'd love to see some of Grace Potter and the Nocturnal s releases on 180gm vinyl or SACD.

I remember reading something about how this band wanted to create a grittier album than their last, and to that end this album falls flat. Overproduced and way too slick. I did a bit of research and found out the reason why. Originally there was supposed to be a Grace Potter solo album called "Medicine", to be produced by T-Bone Burnett. Instead, Mart Batson takes the helm. He's produced the likes of Dr. Dre, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Nas, Beyonce. So why then is he trying to ruin rock n' roll by producing a band I love? If I found out my new record was going to be produced by someone who supports 50 Cent in any way, I would immediately pull a Tom Petty and turn into the biggest, rightfully righteous a-hole on the planet. But, this album was by far their biggest hit to date, so I guess they got what they wanted (the record label, I have no idea what the band wanted, and maybe they had very little say) There are a few catchy hooks here and there, but listening to live versions of these songs makes album versions sound pretty bland. Other than Tiny Light, the lyrics are pretty docile and don't have too much to say.

My advice, call up Marc Ford to produce the next album. What he did with Ryan Bingham is easily the best thing that's been done in a decade. See Mescalito,
Roadhouse Sun Much like the New Dave Matthews Band album, the soullessness of the producer is way too obvious.
